Ian Healy laid down the challenge to Shamar Joseph in the lead up to the first Test between Australia and the West Indies before the young star delivered as 14 wickets fell on day one.

Joseph, who made his name in Australia during the 2024 series, had Australia reeling at 2-14 early, removing Sam Konstas (3) and Cam Green (3).

Pat Cummins won the toss at Kensington Oval and elected to bat but may have regretted that when Jayden Seales claimed the third wicket of Josh Inglis (5) at 3-22.

Travis Head and Usman Khawaja led a fightback, combining for partnership of 89 runs.

But Khawaja became Joseph’s third victim when he was gone for 47.

By tea, Australia was 6-138 with Beau Webster skittled by Joseph for 11 while Alex Carey’s dismissal for 8 brought about the end of the session.

When play resumed, Travis Head’s half-century was short-lived as Justin Greaves sent him packing for 59. Mitchell Starc followed, caught at slip for a duck off Seales’ bowling.

That left the Aussies 8-143.

“They’re up and about the Windies,” Greg Blewett said on Fox’s coverage.

Pat Cummins helped the tail wag on his own with 28 before he hit the ball to Kraigg Brathwaite at mid-off and brought Josh Hazlewood to the crease.

Hazlewood (4) was the last to be dismissed, with Australia bowled out for 180. Seales finished with 5-60.

In reply, the West Indies struggled with the bat, finishing the day 4-57.

Starc grabbed the first two wickets, dismissing Kraigg Brathwaite (4) and John Campbell (7).

Cummins had Keacy Carty (20) caught behind at 3-52 before nightwatchman Jomel Warrican. He lasted two balls and was bowled by Hazlewood.

Brandon King finished not out on 23 while captain Roston Chase is on 1.

Day two begins at midnight Thursday AEST.
